 Chasm Tile

By DAGORIN - Dec. 31, 1969

Dimensions: 7.5" x 7.5" x 0.5"

This was cast from Hirst Arts molds 265 (Large Flagstone Mold) and 266 (Large Flagstone Accessory Mold). First, I glued the squares from both set to a sheet of paper. Then chasm was created by cutting the flat portions from some of the squares from the accessory mold to create greater depth. The tile was then painted with a dark brown which was watered slightly to get it into the cracks between the stones more easily. Then I applied burnt umber to the tops of the stones. The water was created with meltable plastic used for stained glass forms spread through the river bed. Then tile was then baked to melt the plastic. After this, the tile was glued to a base of foam core board, and the chasm was painted black. Then I topped off the flagstones with coat of cream ivory with which I also edged the river to provide an added sense that the water was in motion.
