By PELLINOR - Dec. 31, 1969 measurements: 10,5x12.5x5.75"block count: appr. 370 molds used: # 80 Dragon's teeth (big Columns) # 62 Roman Temple (base & altar) # 71 Fieldstone Acessoires (small column on the altar) * Celtic Floortiles(custom mold) the custom tiles: the celtic floortiles were made using the decorative tiles from the tomb mold (as I didn't have somethng like the roman temple at that time). They were filled to smooth bricks, molded, then I carved the knots. The knots are designed inspired by a celtic-border font I found. I printed the layout on paper treated with tape and some sort of mold release with an inkjet printer, as the ink doesn't stick to this the image can be transfered to a smooth plaster surface. plan: The first idea of this building was something to use the celtic knotwork tiles, so there would be a floor with a knot pattern on it as the center. Then I added the big columns, base and entrance and was surprised how big this thing would be. I also decided to first build the temple as a ruin, with the possibility to add a roof later, so the broken columns would be removable and the rest of the structure would be intact. construction: I began with the knotwork floor glued together upside down, then I built the rest of the base around it. The side walls are the only supports of the floor, to give it more strength I poured plaster in the structure. I didn't wet it overall because I noticed that if you pour plaster on (relatively) dry plaster it dries harder than if there is too much water present. that is why the surface of the poured plaster looks so uneven. The entrance stair was built separately as I first glued together the statue posts and the nrealized I wouldn't be able to put the whole thing upside down if I glued them on. I had some problems with warped pieces as the roman temple mold I used was a bit warped, so I had to use lots of Milliput to fill in small spaces and some of the lines are not completely straight. Also the celtic tiles come out a bit smaller than the roman temple tiles, leaving more spaces to fill. The bird statue is a GW falcon, I don't know who made the other two (Igot them in a sale some time ago). painting: I first planned to paint the knots floor the same grey scheme as the rest of the temple, then it was black with white lines as I saw how good this brings out the knot structure. As this didn't match at all with the dark mood of the rest of the temple I changed it to red lines. So the pain scheme for the floor is * black drybrush (no priming) * white wash (could probably be left out) * (black drybrush) * red wash * black drybrush the statues are primed black and washed in a color named 'mint green', the rest is primed black, drybrushed dark grey & light grey. I first planned the temple as a mortheim structure, in the end it got a quite futuristic mood. It's funny how much project plans change even during the painting process...
