By DUKEDREAL - Dec. 31, 1969

Smith shop:

Photos of Project:

Molds used:
Basic Fieldstone Mold cast at least 10 times
Clay Roof Tile mold for at least 10 times
Fieldstone Tower Mold for 1 time for a few pieces
Small Brick Mold cast at least 8 times
Fieldstone accessory mold at least 2 times for the large arch and the railing.

Measurements:
Base: 14 inches long by 11 inches wide by 7 inches tall
Building: 7 ½ inches long by 7 ½ inches wide by 5 inches tall

Construction Methods:

The actual building of the structure is straightforward. The furnace was made first and then the fieldstone walls were made around it. The roof was made of foam board covered in the Clay tile mold pieces but using real wood for the eves and the pediment.

The stairway and the loading dock area are made from mainly the tiles with additional pieces. The coal bin was made from left over pieces and a rounded arch turned upside down.

Painting of the piece:
The entire structure was spray-painted black. I then painted the stones in primary and secondary colors of red, yellow, blue, orange, and green. I then brushed on sepia ink and let it dry. Then I dry brushed on a coat of light gray. Then another ink wash of diluted black and if necessary another dry bushing of gray. The roof was painted black and then dry-brushed once with a dark red followed by a very light dry brushing of yellow. The furnace was painted black then dry brushed red followed by several ink washes. The coals inside were done as how Hirstarts shows on his site.

The hill was made out of packing foam cut down to create the hill. The top of the hill was a scrap piece of foam board. Glue and sand was then added to create the texture and to seal the foam when it was spray-painted black. The ground was covered in rough sand and then pieces of woodland scenic ground foam were glued on. The road is from their basalt series.

Interior details:

The wooden seats were made with basswood cut to size to fit 25mm miniatures. The wood was stained with walnut stain. The weapons are made from bamboo skewers with mat board used for the metal parts. The rivets were made with puffy paint and then painted black and dry brushed with silver. The blacksmith’s tools were made from balsa wood and paper clips and then painted. The armor on the stands was made from cereal box cardboard that was shaped. Then the armor was painted with puffy paint to create the ridges then painted black and dry brushed with silver.
The wheel barrow outside was made of balsa wood, a button for the wheel, and cereal box cardboard for the bed.

i think you may have posted images too big for the majority, however i agree with GB the differently coloured walls look great and it's good to see some timber holding the roof up, most projects tiled rooves appear to be held up by skyhooks.
