By GAMER - Dec. 31, 1969 The bottom of the pit is a 6" fieldstone tower section. Once the stair level is reached, straight blocks are inserted between each curved section. The first piece used is a 1/4" block. Each successive row increases the size of the straight block by 1/4". In this manner you can expand the ring out as far as needed. The stairway up to the pit was made using stair pieces from the fieldstone bridge. There is also a stair piece I made to lead up to the pit, but including it would have violated the 12" limit of the entry...... The base of the pit is made from blueboard foam insulation. Two pieces were needed. The lower piece had a 6" hole cut into it for the lower section of the pit. The upper half was a bit more of a challenge. The outline of the widest portion of the pit was traced, and after a basic outline was cut, I dug out enough foam to fit the seating section in. To finish the outside, I realized that using all one style would probably not look right. For the bottom half I just dug out chunks and sprinkeld sand over my first coat of paint. The upper half was carved with a rock theme. Cracks were cut into the top and then spackling was spread over the rest to give the top of the foam a more irregular look. Painting was three layers of gray, going from very dark to a light gray top coat.
