 Imperial Walker!

By DUKEDREAL - Dec. 31, 1969

Imperial Walker

Height 17 inches
Length 18 inches
Width 10 inches

Molds used:
Turret Mold #61, Fieldstone Accessories Mold #71, Smooth Floor Tiles Various Sizes Mold #202, Station Builder Mold #300, Dragons Teeth Accessory Mold # 80

Other Materials:
Foam Board
Styrene for various detailing
Various pieces from various gaming sprues for various pieces on the inside, Games Workshop Tau guns fro the cannons on the head
Various pieces from Tamiya model taken for various pieces on the inside
Computer stations from an online shop
Sand and rocks for ground affect

Paints used on the AT-AT were Matte Black and a spray coating of Mist Gray followed by dry brushing.

Building:
The AT-AT was built around the idea of playability. Thus one side is open, although it does have a panel to close up the side. The model is to scale. What is interesting is that the schematic in the Star Wars Technical Journal by Shane Johnson was almost to scale to the new Star Wars minis that are out! The legs are built from styrene with blocks glued on to increase the thickness. 40mm round bases make up the knee and shoulder joints.

Fluff:
Lord Vader you may start your landing shortly…

Another great addition to your Star Wars collection. A full-sized Ewok next?? Very creative use of the blocks and nice interior details (and obviously a good place to store your Death Star). Can't help thinking that you'd have been better to enter it in the Unique category.

May the Force be with you always, Abaroth

Wow! I'm not much of a Star Wars fan, but I have to hand it to you - you were very clever with how you put everything together. I never thought you could create something like this with blocks?!? Go figure! Nice job...ps - my husband LOVES Star Wars, and when he saw your entry he was shocked!

This is an extremely cool piece and very well executed. I can hardly believe that such an accurate rendition can be made with HA. Wow it is big. Getting the various angles to line up and simultaneously making such good access to the interior is really well done.

I'm wondering if instead of styrene sheets something else sturdier could have been used for the legs to get rid of the support post. If you have any Mark II ideas let us know because I'm sure there will be a few copies of this made despite the challenge.

Thank you all.
I knew that WOTC was coming out with its own walker for their SW minis game but i wanted to tackle this and see if i could build it. The hardest part was the neck and the feet. After brain storming i came up with the ideas of using the hirst blocks after looking at the different pieces. I left the image with the central support visible, rather than photoshoping it out, because it seemed more honest. But thank you for all the comments. They really do mean a lot!

Instead of buying a plastic model from an imperial walker for a couple of bucks in a toyshop and glue it together in a few nights you made the effort and decided to build one yourself, it must have been a huge job and it's what I call real dedication to the hobby !
On some of the photo's you can hardly notice you used HA-blocks for it, Especially when looking at the detailed close-up shots.

I must confess, I didn't want to like this, not being a big fan of Star Wars since Jar Jar
But you have stretched the use of Hirst Arts blocks (even if you did have to resort to other materials to maintain structural integrity and some detailing)
points for imaginative use of the blocks

Looks very nice!

I've been wanting to scratchbuild a walker for years, do you happen to have any good resources (schematics, etc) that I could get my hands on?

Thanks,

Bryan

Wow. I've been looking through all of your Star Wars entries. I'm not sure which is my favorite, but this one is pretty insane.

You have a very open-minded approach to building with Hirst Art blocks that is refreshing. It's almost the type of approach where Legos are used to build giant models like the WhiteHouse such that anything imagined can be built.

Other than the tile pattern on the sides, the model is just insanely accurate.

I am both shocked and amazed that you were able to build a walker out of blocks. Extremely impressive.
