The Fountain Temple of Lord Dragon Chaz

By HYPERION - Dec. 31, 1969

Long ago in the world, dragons filled the skies. These dragons protected and watched over man. Two empires ruled the land and tensions had been running high for quite some time. One day war broke out between the empires. The war lasted for 3 years and the world had become shrouded in darkness. Man was on the brink of destruction. That is when Lord Dragon Chaz intervened. He ended the war and united the world under one empire. He brought the world out of darkness. He saved humanity. However, in the end all this was done at the expense of Chaz’s own life. In memory of Chaz the new empire built the Fountain Temple of Lord Dragon Chaz. Now everyone across time would know what Chaz sacrificed so that we may live on. It is said that when the world begins fighting amongst itself that the waters of the fountain overflow with Chaz’s tears.

Other Materials:

Plastic Divider (Waterfall)
Felt (Bottom of Model)
Plexiglass (For See Through Water Effect)
Tiny Christmas Lights

The Model is 13’’H x 14’’W x 11’’D and is made up of approximately 500 bricks.

This model was originally intended to have real water running through it; however, that proved to be more difficult then was originally thought (Imahilus you were right). So I went with envirotex and am happy with the results. This is my first experience with envirotex and water effects and I think it turned out pretty good. To make up for the lack of real water I have lights strung throughout the model to light it up at night. This meant that I needed bases out of plexiglass so the light could shine through. That’s when I decided to create the resting place below the top part of the fountain.

The base of the fountain is a basic piece made from normal blocks and the prison tower corner blocks. It was two pieces separating the bottom part which held the lights from the top part which help the lower fountain pool of water. I used half blocks on one layer so I could fit the plexiglass into that layer. The corner blocks had to be cut so I used a Dremel for that. There is also a hole in the plexiglass for the lights to come through. Finally, I build an extra section that matched the tower dimensions for support.

The tower itself is mainly basic blocks and the prison tower corner blocks. There are lights strung throughout the inside to light it up. The windows and doors are all basic designs. The top part of the tower I call the resting place. This is directly below the top fountain pool. It holds 4 benches and 4 lamps. The 4 lamps have been bored out with my Dremel and each one contains a light. I added arches for decorative effect.

The top fountain pool is also a plexiglass base created in the same way as the bottom one. I made a statue base from several molds and added the gargoyles for decoration. The miniature is a Reaper Mini.

The stairs are made from the prison tower and circular tower blocks. For future reference, gravity defying stairs are lots of fun. They are “held up” by two pillars from the tomb mold.

Once I finished the construction I moved on to my crutch, painting. I went with the classic gray scheme, dark gray base, medium gray dry brush, and a light gray highlight. I then used the different colors of gray to highlight different areas of the model. I used the light gray for the corner blocks, stair accents, arches, and pillars. I thought the different colors really help to bring out the different areas of the model.

The water effects are done with envirotex and 5 minute epoxy using Bruce’s tips. The waterfall is a plastic divider covered with envirotex. When I tested this the divider became almost clear but still had a frosted effect like running water.

All in all I am very pleased with this model. It has gone through about a hundred different variations. I hope you enjoy the final design. If you would like more specific information on any particular part of building it I would be happy to provide them.

An very interesting fountain. The only thing that does not convince me are the lateral staircases (as I have said in another comment, even in a word of magic, I am concerned with issues of structural soundness).

But everything else is just great. The water in the pools is fantastic. The idea of having a room behind the fountain is very interesting (I might reuse this concept later). And the lights! I don't find an appropriate comment for them, so impressive are your electrical achievements. It would have been worth a tutorial on how you installed them.

Very imaginative. The lights look cool and using the plexi so they show through was a great concept. I can just imagine the sound from that great fall of water one could hardly hear themselves think, and an umbrella or raincoat for the spray would be a must. Nice job, it really drew me in.

A very interesting fountain build. The lights make a very cool addition, giving the model another level of interest. It is a shame some of the pictures are fuzzy, but I know it is very hard to take "night" shots.
My one criticism, is that the cascade should taper a little towards the bottom.

A very interesting design. The stairs make it look very fragile and dainty but then you have this huge waterfall cascading down between them. The water in the pool at the bottom really looks great and looks like a pool of water. The night scenes also add a bit of mystery to the piece as well. Overall a great build.
