Having custom built several blocks to compliment the Hirst Arts range, I know how difficult it is to size these accurately. A couple of weeks ago I came up with a solution, and it works very well. :-)
Materials required:
Wood block (preferably hardwood), router and straight plunging bit. (This is the type used for cutting square section grooves)
Method:
1. Set the router to the required depth of the piece e.g. 1/4 inch for floor tiles.
2. Mark out an area slightly bigger than your block on the wood.
3. Remove the wood from this area using the router.
4. Check your blocks fit, if not adjust to size.
Congratulations!! Your sanding block is now complete.
By placing the castings face down into the recess in the wood block, and then sanding the exposed face with the sandpaper around another wood block, it is quick and easy to make all your casting the required depth.
