 Cathedral

By MALIFOCENT - Dec. 31, 1969

I started out using Bruce's basic Cathedral design. Total, I used molds 50, 51, 52, 55, 56, 60, 61, and 100. The finished project is approximately 2010 blocks. I assembled the pieces roughly to Bruce's design with a few modifications. I did not want a dark looking Cathedral so I chose to paint the entire thing white. I used metallic colors for all the detail (mainly colors that matched the tiffany style windows). I used alternate blue, purple, green, blue green, and silver for the detail on the main floor and then simply arranged how I wanted the layers of paint to look on the entire house. For the Cathedral sides where the arches are, I wanted them to show through (which can be seen in the first picture). So, I made individual squares using the shingles and laid them in. They can be removed to show more light inside. I decided not to glue the two front towers in and using the stair mold I created a semi-circular stair case to the top. The stairs lined up perfectly. At the top of each tower, I cut a 4x4 block off the roof and glued/nailed working hinges in, which line up with the top set of the stair case. I used the basic window and door designs from Bruce's website but I did not want all the windows covered. I left the tower and front windows uncovered to show the staircase. I glued the doors permanently open. As for the inside, I wanted flower boxes (call me girly). Left over shingles worked nicely and fit exactly. I constructed a small alter (by my own design) matching the paint with the columns inside. Much to my dislike, the inside is still pretty bare. And what is not shown yet are the small pews I am creating with popsicle sticks. As for the outside, this is where the fun began as I love to decorate. On the right side I created a small rose trellis using sticks from my own back yard. The colored flower bushes along both sides were made from dyeing and shredding styrofoam. I then cut rectangular blocks of styrofoam, put glue on them and then dipped them in the shredded colors. Using a similar trick Bruce used, I found dried flowers that could be used as trees. I started with a pretty full piece and added additional tree limbs, painted the limbs and trunk brown. To stand the tree up, I used 1 square cube block, carved a hole in the middle and glued the tree in. I wanted the appearance of a sitting place so I designed the tree base, filled the middle with fake grass and sprinkled flowers on top, covering the block which is holding the tree in place. For the exterior mossy look...you guessed it. A nice big bag of moss comes in so many different shapes and forms and gives a much nicer mossy appearance than painted moss. I pulled out and fit pieces of moss, trying to give it a "growing" look on the Cahtedral and parts of the fence. For the fence, I used the basic fence block design from the Cathedral blue prints. For each actual fence section, I split and cut popsicle sticks, painted and glued them together. For the look of nails in the fence, I used a drop of glue where a nail would go. Once dried,I painted each glue drop silver. To assemble the fence, once the fence sections and posts were painted and dried, I lined the fence sections up with each post. I carved holes in the posts and slid the fence sections in. Once satisfied, everything was glued in place. For the front fence opening, I nailed and glued working hinges in place. To compliment and complete the project, I painted and placed many of the warhammer characters that I like on and around the Cathedral. The entire project was put together using only tacky glue.
