By DENALIGREYWOLF - Dec. 31, 1969 I have several books on castles not to mention there are dozens of web sites with castle pictures. After seeing Bruce’s Turret mold I felt that I finally had the pieces that I would used to design a basic 4 walled castle with circular towers on one side. I knew that unlike the bunker I built, laying out the floor plan would be harder since I was going to be building several layers. Therefore I settled on the idea on building the base as one piece and attaching the next levels in breakaway sets. I still laid out pieces, unglued, to see how they would connect and I recommend this practice, however with the turret pieces, they tended to fall over more as I got higher and higher. Someone suggested using Lego’s to support the sides as I built and that practice helped immensely. On the main floor I made one major mistake in construction, which lead me to having to use a wooden plank for the 2nd floor. When I attached the circular pieces to the two corners I decided to enclose the circle starting on the 4th block off the ground. This great, at least I thought it did, but when it came to laying the next floor, I realized that I do not have curved cobblestone pieces. After trying to sand some down, I elected to go with a wooden floor. Wood is much easier to shape with a saw. When It came time to building the roof, I have a lot easier time with that floor because I still have a complete square floor area to work with. Using Bruce’s suggestions for building his pieces, I ensure that the pieces were interlocking. The problem I later found with this is that when I was painting on the three coats and then sealing the entire piece, the layers of paint added to the thickness of the pieces. Now where the interlocking pieces came together the fit was to tight especially with the circular blocks. To solve this problem I became sanding down these blocks somewhat before gluing them into place. There may be some gap between the pieces, after painting but not enough of one to be distracting. The only new block I would Bruce to make would be an arrow slit for the turret mold. I placed several windows in the circular tower parts of the castle, but they look to large to me. Other then that I had more then enough different block designs to work with to build this castle.
