 The Keep by Dennis Bryson

By DENNIS_BRYSON - Dec. 31, 1969

DESCRIPTION :-
Ok well I wanted to build something that would intimidate any opponent on the battle field in the beginning, an so I decided to build a castle, the first one I wanted to build was 40 inches square, and I even started on that one, but when I was half done I could barley lift it, how was I going to get it to games an such if I could not move it?

So I smashed it an turned that into ruins, an started a castle a little smaller, this one is 16 inches cubed approx. is still a good size for gaming and comes apart for transit. There was nothing special done to any of the bricks, they were taken right from the mold, dried an then added to the castle.

Ok I first started at my PC, I used "CorelDRAW" to plan out how this castle would look at scale, I designed the blueprints an printed them out. I started making bricks every night for about 3 months, I would have been quicker but with work an home a few hours a night was all I could spare.

Once I had enough bricks, I build the base from foam, 6 layers of ½ inch Foam, doing it that way is easy to get the path so figures do not tip off. It did not look as good as one nice long smooth path, but is easy for gaming.

Once the base was built, I started to lay the foundations, the whole bottom two rows of the castle is connected, the towers to the walls an the walls to the dungeon, it is basically all one, I did this because it has to take the weight of the rest of the castle, I also layed the cobblestone at this time, an cut bits of cobblestone to fit in around the base of the towers (see diagram -1).

Once the foundation was in, I started at the keep and built up, then out along the walls, built the towers in sections an added them, to the wall, built the tower middle sections and tops, then the top of the keep. And it was done.

To paint it, I used a water based printers ink, thinned a bit, an slapped on, black was the base coat, the Plaster of Paris seems to drink the water based ink right up I found it really great for getting deep into the gaps, I then brushed, dark, medium, an light grey over the walls. Dark an medium brown over the cobblestone. Dark, medium brown an light orange over the wood.

The floor I cut from balsa wood, as I did the doors as well an the beans that support the walkway. So I guess that is cheating a bit, if only I had the wood mold.

Ok things of note, only one, I can think of, the walkways on the walls, I used the window shutters from the dragons inn mold # I found this is great an I have to tell you all "A must" if you have walkways on a wall, the bases of the figures seem to almost lock right into the little raised bits on the shutters, an it did not look that bad either. The only time a figure falls of this walkway is when I push it. It is really great. (see diagram - 2)
