By CWAUGH - Dec. 31, 1969 ArchMage's TowerThe key to this large tower's construction lies in using the wall section mold to build the large base tower. Each side is made fom wall sections, with basic blocks at the corners. Note that all basic blocks were used with the scraped side facing inwards, to avoid dimensional variation. The base consists of 3 layers, each of which is 4 wall sections. The gate and arrow slits were added by cutting openings in the wall sections with a dremel tool. At the top of the base section, there is wooden cross-bracing glued to the sides to support the upper tower. The middle deck was built with wall sections glued down on a piece of paper, with small turret mold sections added at the corners. The deck overlaps the base dimensions below by one block, so that when it was glued to the base I could add the support braces and turret bottoms. The middle part of the tower is a variation on the bell tower, with the central panel on each side made in 1 piece from a custom mold. The upper-most section also has each side made from a custom mold. The upper part holds a tea light candle, which gives a nice eerie glow to the eye-shaped windows. (Made from 2 gothic arches.) The 'glass' is plastic from a huge sheet intended for an overhead flourescent light. Base: layers of foam carved with a hot wire tool, painted, and decorated with Woodland Scenics bushes. Molds: Primarily wall section, bell tower, small turret. Small details from the fieldstone accessory mold and others. Painting: Very dark grey with a medium grey drybrush. In this case, I primed the whole tower with rust-colored spray paint, just to avoid having the plaster 'drink' as much paint. Dimensions: 8.5" x 8.5" x 26", although on its base it stands almost 30" tall.
