Crown Keep, A Warmaster High Elf bastion

By TERRAIN - Dec. 31, 1969

I was casting about (pun intended) for a new project, a step away from the grim Epic 40k models and big dioramas I'd been building. Looking around, on a calendar was some clip-art of a crown for a holiday. I thought a structure in the shape of a crown would be interesting and decided to make a keep.

Immediately I decided to do this in 10mm Warmaster scale, as I'd been meaning to do something for the game anyway. A truly circular keep was impossible as there aren't any circular small blocks yet. An octagonal shape was the next best thing.

I didn't want the Crown Keep to be hard and mean, but interesting and fantastic. So it became a High Elf Crown Keep. I was determined to make it look attractive, decorative and stylish, yet functional. The walls wouldn’t be very high, just enough to prevent infantry from getting in without ladders. Now I was ready to build the Crown Keep. I used the following molds:
  • Small Brick #250
  • Dragon’s Inn #51
  • Gothic Church #54
  • Bell Tower #55
  1. I used the Small Brick mold to quickly create eight sides of the keep. One would be removed for the entrance, but I needed eight sections to line things up.
  2. The top of each section is a 1”x1/2”x1/4” rectangle from the Dragon’s Inn mold plus one 1/2”x1/4”x1/4” brick. This allows the Warmaster bases to neatly fit on the top. I added small triangular pieces from the Small Brick mold under the walkways to provide support.
  3. Using a masonite wood base, I laid out the plan. The inside angles are 135 degrees.
  4. The hard part was the 45 degree angle between sections on the outside of the wall. I toyed with a lot of ideas and settled on cutting 1”x1”x.25” textured floor pieces from the Dragon’s Inn mold to fit these spots. Stacking them up five high would fill the gaps and produce a textured top to boot.
  5. After gluing the walls to the base (except for the one which would be removed for the entrance) and gluing the 45 degree pieces between them, it was ready for some decoration. Along the tops of the walls I placed 1”x1/4” semi-cylindrical pieces. At the corners I trimmed them to fit.
  6. Next I used 1”x1/4” semi-cylindrical pieces and curly end pieces from the Gothic Church mold, plus a decorative piece from the Bell Tower mold, to create the corner decorations. A little putty made them reach the ground.
  7. The entrance needed to be more interesting. More semi-cylindrical pieces kept the design consistent. The rest of the pieces were from the Small Bricks mold.
  8. Since this is a High Elf keep, I painted it medium gray and drybrushed white over it. The semi-cylindrical pieces got a much heavier coat of white. The base was sanded and painted, then the whole thing was matte varnished.
  9. Crowns have jewels, so I decorated it with shiny plastic half-beads. I have an assembled but unpainted Warmaster High Elf army that I plan on making Shadow Warriors (who fight the Dark Elves), so I decided on blue and purple for the gems.
  10. The Crown Keep is done but eventually I want to add to it. I want to add steps on the inside, maybe some more decoration atop the walls, an inside structure like a fountain and of course a gate. None were necessary for play though so I’m going to leave it as-is for now.
