 Glade of Contemplation

By BOSSMAN - Dec. 31, 1969

“Glade of Contemplation”

Fluff

Protected in a forest dell by the strength of the Star Horn Keep is the Glade of Contemplation, a place were elves can meet in times of peace. In the center of the glade is a small fountain on which stands a statue of an elven maiden. Set in the walls are recessed where elves may sit and relax whist listening to the gentle tinkling of water in the fountain or the sounds of the surrounding forest. Looming over the glade (and some say imbued with spells of non-detection) are four statues of unicorns; a tangible reminder of the power of the nearby Star Horn Keep.

Construction

The walls are made using fieldstone blocks that are capped with normal capping and decorative blocks. The floor uses cobblestone blocks and the fountain is from the base of the turret mould.

The glade is made up of approximately 116 blocks cast in Patternstone H. (A brand of plasterstone available in Oz).

Moulds Used

#50 Wizards Tower (Capping blocks)
#54 Gothic Church (Decorative block)
#55 Bell Tower (Trim block)
#61 Turret Mould (Turret decorative base and cap)
#70 Fieldstone Mould (Basic fieldstone blocks, arches)
#71 Fieldstone Accessory Mould (Recessed arches, large arch)
#80 Dragons Teeth Accessory Mould (Pillar)
#210 Cobblestone Mould (Cobblestone blocks)

Customising

The bowl of the fountain was sanded out into a concave shape.

Extras

A latex mould was made of the unicorn head used for decoration on the projecting parapet corners. This unicorn head is from a pewter “charm bracelet” favoured by witches and hippies.

A latex mould was also made of a Ral Partha “Clergy” figure which was used as the elf maiden in the statue.

Painting

Painting of the fieldstone and cobblestone was initially in a dark grey followed by subsequent dry brushing in various shades of browns, greys and greens. The final effect was quite pleasing and resembled the Dwarven Forge style of painting. The decorative stonework was painted in a lighter shade of grey then drybrushed in paler shades of grey.

The statues were firstly painted grey then white was slopped on them in a fashion similar to drybrushing but with an overcharged brush. The unicorn horns were painted gold that was then drybrushed in silver.

The water of the fountain was done with lacquer directly onto a grey undercoat. The final result was yellowish in colour suggestive of stagnant water.
