By BOSSMAN - Dec. 31, 1969 “The Border Ward”Introduction As a companion to the Star Horn Keep and Little Star Tower (and a Small HADD entry) I decided to build a monument used to mark the border of the Elven lands defended by these other structures. Again I wanted a similar themed look to this monuments thus its shape. Fluff Travellers on the road passing close by the fringe of the Great Forest are familiar with the stone edifice standing defiantly on the lone knoll between the road and the forest. This monument marks the border of the elven lands and the statues of elven warriors that stare down grimly from this monument remind all of the unseen but watchful eyes that lurk beneath the dark eaves of the nearby trees. For some this knoll is to be shunned and the section of the road that passes by it is hastily travelled, but for those of kind heart and good intentions it is a place were rest can be assured, where attacks by brigands are unlikely and the keen bows of the fair folk have been known to slay would be robbers and murderers. Description The elven border marker is a tall monument that has a base which in plan is shaped as an eight-pointed star. Above this base are statues of grim elven warriors facing each point of the compass. Rising above these is the spire of the monument like the horn of a unicorn. A small chamber within the monument is accessed by a secret door in the base. Within can be found a bow with two full quivers of arrows, a sword and elven waybread along with a flagon of watered wine. A small platform above this enables the occupant to look through spyholes and survey the surrounding area. Construction The border monument is made up of approximately 150 blocks cast in Patternstone H. (A brand of plasterstone available in Oz). Moulds Used #54 Gothic Church (Decorative block) #55 Bell Tower (Recessed arches, decorative blocks) #56 Tomb (Double pillars) #63 Octagon Tower (Octagon blocks) #110 Assorted Blocks (Angled blocks) #136 Decorative Top Caps (Cap block) In addition basic wall and floor blocks were gotten from many different moulds. Extras A latex mould was made of the unicorn head used for decoration on the projecting parapet corners. This unicorn head is from a pewter “charm bracelet” favoured by witches and hippies. A half latex mould was made of a Ral Partha High Elf Command figure which was used to create the statues displayed around the keep. A nail was used for the tower spire. Painting Painting was simply a grey undercoat with subsequent drybrushing of lighter shades of grey. The staues were firstly painted grey then white was slopped on them in a fashion similar to drybrushing but with an overcharged brush. The unicorn horn and spire were painted gold that was then drybrushed in silver.
