 Volcano Tile

By ATHENA - Dec. 31, 1969

Molds:
Fieldstone Wall Mold #70
Large Flagstone Mold #265
Large Flagstone Accessory Mold #266

Dimensions: 7.5" x 7.5" x 1.75"

This tile is built on a base of foamcore board. The volcano is created out of extra wall pieces and squares covered with polymer clay. It was the baked to harden the clay, then I painted the entire thing with a base coat of dark brown. The flagstones were then painted in umber, and then ivory. I painted the volcano and the lava portions black, and some of the edges of the flagstones to give them a burnt look. Next came a coat of yellow on the caldera, lava flows and streams, and a portion of the inside of the volcano. Next, I went over these portions again with a red-yellow (heavy on the red) mixture, then painted the middle sections of these with yellow again. While the yellow was still wet, I edged it with red to blur where the two colors met. While the red was wat, I painted to the very edges with black. I repeated these steps on two spots on the flagstones to give it the effect of being hollowed out by lava.
