 Orc Lair

By LEIGHN - Dec. 31, 1969

This set is designed with lots of narrow hallways and two rooms to open things up for living. The set was created using the Large Flagstone Tile, Large Flagstone Tile Accessories, Fieldstone Wall and Wooden Plank molds.

There are two walls in the large rooms that have been broken down and carved to look like sloped walls. The water was painted using Bruce’s tips, dark blue with clear fingernail polish on top. The “spring” in the dining room has about 20 layers of polish to make it look deeper. Also the cracks between the spring and the stream have been painted blue and covered with polish to look like the spring is flowing into the stream. The moss was added using watered down glue and then sprinkling on dark green terrain grass.

With 88 inches of wall stacked 2 inches high you need 352 inches of fieldstone wall. That translates to about 25 casts of the mold. There are 5 arches over the water in the hall and double hall tiles.

The whole set was base coated with black and then drybrushed green and then brown. This gives the set a dark look that I figured would be perfect for an Orc lair.

With several hallways and many entrances to each room, the tiles can be rearranged for several scenarios. The "standard" layout is for two players. I put 2 chests in the straight hall and 2 in the dining room. This forces the players to engage in combat in fairly tight quarters. Another layout is to run a one player at a time scenario. For this scenario I put 3 chests in the straight hall starting at the far end and placing them one in front of the other. Take one of the entry halls and place it on the end of the other for a long, twisting entrance. Then one player plays the heroes and the other plays monster master. The goal is to get the most treasure out of the lair. After the first player is done, reset everything with the same chests and monster tokens. Then player two takes his turn playing the heroes and player one gets to defend his score as the monster master.
