 Middle Earth Structure

By AURORA_BOREALIS - Dec. 31, 1969

Molds Used:

Wizard's Tower Mold #50
Gothic Church Mold #54
Tomb Mold #56
Prison Tower Mold #60
Turret Mold #61
Dragon's Teeth Accessory Mold #80

This piece started its life as Bruce’s wizard’s tower. Somehow, though, I never seem to build the designs that are from the website. Once I’d realized that the piece was taking on a life of its own, I began to envision a structure with a hint of middle eastern architecture. I wanted something with graceful curves and neat lines. The result is a building that has numerous balconies and many windows. The end result is a building that speaks more of grandeur and power than it does of defence. The main entrance is an elaborate affair dominated by the curved tomb mold pieces that flank the doorway. Rather than the traditional door assembly, I chose to use a pair of floor tiles stacked one atop the other. The result is a door of commanding proportions built of beaten gold. The dragon keystone offers another reminder of the occupant’s power.

The biggest challenge in building this piece came in fitting the roof to the curvature of the attached round tower. The curved tower required a curve to the roof assembly. To achieve a proper fit, I cut a mockup roof out of cardboard and kept trimming it till the right fit was achieved. The process was tedious, but the end result is a roof that snugly hugs the tower. To support the roof, I built three pieces that hold up the roof at even intervals (see roof detail shot).

The second major challenge came in integrating the gothic windows into the round tower. Since I’d decided to attempt a more elaborate construction, I opted to go with the more open and opulent gothic windows. Integrating the gothic windows required trimming of the back edges of the window assemblies to allow them to mesh properly with the curve of the tower blocks. This was challenging since the pieces really aren’t meant for a curved fit.

Putting a curved, and projecting balcony together proved to be the third major obstacle faced in this project. The curved balcony incorporates Bruce’s basic design underneath as a support, however, the upper assembly required tinkering and a bit of "kit bashing." The result is a balcony that needs trimmed blocks to fit into the rounded tower. Unlike in the standard balcony, this one needed to be cut to accept the curve of the tower wall.

The main tower of the structure incorporates the turret mold roof but is supported on inverted "teeth" from the Dragon accessories mold. The result is a slightly projecting "ring" that frames the tower and adds some character to the turret.

The side balcony assembly is more standard, but differs in that it has a projecting roof that covers it in. The roof assembly sits atop a projection incorporated into the wall and is detailed in a separate photo. Essentially the roof is a half-assembled floor from the larger 4" tower mold.
