 Chocolate Mine

By PELLINOR - Dec. 31, 1969

measurements: 3.5x3.5x4.5" (the entrance)
11x11x5.5" (with base)
block count: 80

molds:
# 70 Fieldstone wall
# 71 FstnAcc
# 80 Dragon's Teeth

custom molds:
2 molds with the required pieces on them, made out of food-quality silicone.

molds:
I used Wacker elastosil 4440 silicone. To get molds for use with food I just needed a special hardener that would do with all wacker silicones.

plan:
The piece is planned as a birthday cake representing a chocolate mine. As the birthday it is planned for is still some tome away this is just a prototype to test all the theories I had about building with chocolate. This piece has a 'cake-floor' (not sure about the translation) from the supermarket as a base, the planned one will have a real chocolate cake (which would make more sense as an environment to dig for chocolate of course).

casting process & coloring:
The piece is made of 3 sorts of chocolate: regular brown one, white chocolate and a 2:1 mixture of brown&white. The fieldstone parts are done with medium/dark brown, the decorations are white/dark brown. I first brushed the lighter color of chocolate into the details, then filled the pockets with the darker color. Scraping is possible though not as exactly as with plaster. The coloring can't be done very exact because the the still liquid chocolate tends to sink down while doing the rest of the mold (see the railing pieces) and the different colors sometimes mix when pouring the dark kind or when scraping.
I am a bit disappointed about how the colors turned out in the photos, as the fieldstone pieces look like cast in a single color. You don't really notice the darker color coming through in the spaces, it just looks like regular shadows.
Due to the hot weather of the last weeks I had to put the chocolate in the fridge to get it hard enough so I wouldt't leave pingerprints in it. When the molds are cold they are stiffer and more stressed when demoloding. I've also made the experiance that chocolate tends to stick to the mold a bit. I have already damaged the mold with the fieldstone alcove pieces when demolding (I never got one out unbroken).

construction:
I already mentioned the main problem: fingerprints. Just touch the piece you're working on a secont too long and you'll leave a mark you won't get away easily. Putting the pieces in the fridge between each step is quite important. Another problem: the chocolate I used as glue tended to get hard very quick, so the glued connections didn't get as exact as i'm used to, especially when gluing relatively big pieces like completed walls.
the base is a 'cake-flooring' (this is the word by word translation, I guess you know what I mean..) from the supermarket, with a coat of dark chocolate. As flock I used small pieces of coconut (not sure what you'd call them, it's somewhere between 'pieces' and a 'powder'), with green food color on them. The horns on top of the entrance are cashew nuts.
