 Temple of Lathander

By YRM - Dec. 31, 1969

The total size, measured from base to tip in every direction, is 6" tall, 12" deep, and 18" wide (total 36"). This open structure is designed for easy flowthrough by worshippers but somewhat priveleged access to the roof, where the priests gather around the sun portal each noon to enchant the waters of the MorningLord pool and bless the statue.

Unlike the Arcanist Tower, every archway in this structure is rounded. The basic building is perfectly square but with myriads of round elements and the "ruined tower" hanging gardens around the outside. Stairs in the back lead up to the roof, and the floor between those stairs can be removed to enter a tomb underneath the temple (not part of the structure, but the structure can sit atop it when the town is finished).

- CONSTRUCTION -

Most of the castings are made from green die-stone, a strong dental plaster that's slightly cheaper and weaker than Excalibur. (which is also great)

Molds used:
- Gothic Arena Accessories Mold #42
- Gothic Panel Accessories Mold #43
- Gothic Dungeon Builder #45
- Ruined Tower Mold #65
- Gothic Floor Tiles Mold #205
- Dragon's Inn Mold #51
- Bridge Mold #53
- Turret Mold #61
- Wizard's Tower Mold #50
- Bell Tower Mold #55
- Tomb Mold #56
- Small Brick Mold #250

Other materials:
- Roman style decorative buttons
- Matte Board
- Woodland Scenic's Dark Green Tree Foliage (hanging foliage)
- Wooden Buttons
- Clear 50/50 gloss to fill the pool in the back with "water"
- Primer/Paint
- Decorative Press mold (made decorative scrolling castings)
- Rope cut from a Crown Royal bag (around fountain)
- Brass round glitter beads (coins in sun-pool)

Painting Techniques:
I used a dark wash on the ground and floor surfaces before drybrushing to give them a subtle visual break from the walls. I also highlighted many of the gothic edge elements in a Shining Gold colored paint.

Primarily, this building can be fully used just by lifting off the roof by holding the rim around the Sun Portal, but it comes apart further for storage or to make it easier to reach inside. The statue and pool in the center can be removed and used elsewhere as part of a ruins or other monuments.

Custom Trimming:
This project didn't require much custom trimming, but I did pour plaster into the area between the round Sun Portal and the square floor tiles of the roof. You can see there's a semi-rough area that isn't part of the tiles if you look closely.

After building the tight bridges and walkways of the Arcanist Tower, I wanted to build a softer, friendlier, more open and inviting structure... besides, when evil forces overtake the temple, it'll give me more room to move legions of undead through the model. :-)

- STRUCTURAL NOTES -

- You don't need to use the rounded ruin tower sides as part of the model if your gaming table doesn't have the room.

- The statue and pool seperate and become an item which can have other uses. The statue also can "come to life" as it's not glued down to the base.

- When the statue and pool are in place, they help to support the roof, but it won't fall through if the centerpiece isn't there either.

I've included enough pictures to display every unique aspect and angle, as well as some "action" pictures that involve miniatures and backgrounds to try to drop the model into a stylized, but realistic looking "game environment".

As in every entry, I'd like to take a minute to thank the fellow hobbyists who made my first year building with HirstArts very rewarding. I hope that I can inspire a few people in return
