 Magic Item Shop

By YRM - Dec. 31, 1969

The total size, measured from base to tip in every direction, is 13.5" tall (to the tip of the tower), 10" deep, and 13" wide (total 36.5"). This building is designed to deter theives and display magical items. Anywhere that looks like a tempting breaking point is instead heavily warded. The gazebo-like overlook at the top of the tower is a good place for the wizard who runs the shop to place the final enchantments into certain items.

The building is designed to look welcoming, yet suggest a level of affluence. The items sold within are quite expensive, but yet they're necessary for any adventurer who wishes to extend their career. It's quite possible to stage encounters within or around this shop, or to have militia firing from positions in the tower or from other lower level windows in the event of a town invasion.

- CONSTRUCTION -

Most of the castings are made from Excalibur Dental Plaster. It's great stuff, but expensive and a touch heavy.

Molds used:
- Gothic Dungeon Builder #45
- Octagon Tower Mold #63
- Gothic Floor Tiles Mold #205
- Dragon's Inn Mold #51
- Gothic Panel Accessories Mold #43
- Turret Mold #61
- Wizard's Tower Mold #50
- Bell Tower Mold #55
- Tomb Mold #56
- Wood Shingle Roof Mold #240
- Wooden Plank Mold #220

Other materials:
- Printed Sign (inkjet on photo paper)
- Matte Board
- Various Reaper Weapons and Shields
- Various handmade pots, scrolls, staffs, etc. (super sculpey)
- Primer/Paint
- Some small decorative metal bracelet cylinders (for arm bracers)
- GamesWorkshop Chaos Warrior Halberd

Painting Techniques:
All of the items for sale in the shop are hand painted. The wood is primed with brown primer and the building with gray, and then several appropriate coats of drybrushing are put on top. Prior to drybrushing, I put a darker wash on the floor, as always, to give it some slight visual seperation from the walls.

This building consists of a shop area with alcoves for living or magical guardians and a tower with a winding spiral stair. The upper level can only be reached by levitation or a rope ladder through a trap door in the floor that's heavily warded.

Custom Trimming:
The heaviest custom trimming on this project is the Octagonal Roof. You must design the roof on computer, print it out, fold it up to make sure it's the right peak, then glue it. Print another copy on card stock and cut out each section, then glue wood shingles to each section and cut away what you don't need with a razor saw. A cardboard octagon is then glued into place to give greater strength and uniformity to the roof and the top point is made with pieces from the Turret and Tomb molds.

Gargoyles decorate the recesses around the building, and my players never know which gargoyles are statues and which ones are animated stone defenders of the shop.

As in every entry, I'd like to take a minute to thank the fellow hobbyists who made my first year building with HirstArts very rewarding. I hope that I can inspire a few people in return.
