By GAMER - Dec. 31, 1969 This keep was a chance for me to put my fieldstone corner blocks to use. There was some discussion on the HA message board begging Mr. Hirst to make blocks like these. I got inspired and decided to carve my own. I used the Prison Tower corner blocks to start with and carved fieldstone design into them. The base uses splayed pieces made with pyramid and 1 1/2" flagstone floor tiles. The basic design from there is a simple square keep. The first floor has no windows, so other than the doorway it was pretty easy. I the first floor 1" think. I stopped the insde layer of blocks short so they could be used to support the second floor. The second floor has arrow slits on each side. The wall over the door has two slits, while the other three sides only have one. The interior floors for the second and third floor were made with the Wooden Plank mold. For the third floor, I decided to use windows instead of arrow slits. Since I had made the corner blocks, I wanted to keep the windows in a similar fashion. To accomplish this, I took the arches from the Dragon's Inn and carved them into fieldstone pieces. I also scraped off the texture from the arches, making them smooth like the corner blocks. For the window edges I used smooth blocks from the Station Builder mold. I thought about different ways to do the roof, but in the end decided on the typical flagstone roof. The trap doors are purchased pieces. To paint this piece, I did a coat of very dark gray with a coat of medium gray over that. Then I went over the pieces and painted individual stones three different shades of light to medium gray. Over that I did a coat of light gray, which blends everything in quite nicely. I thought of painting the smooth corner and window blocks a white or very light gray so show them off. After the light gray coat though, I was quite happy with how they looked and left them be.
