 Sunken Temple

By SHAYNE - Dec. 31, 1969

The entry is 24"L x 24"W x 10.5"H

I used the Egyptian Pyramid Mold along with the Egyptian Temple Mold and the Fieldstone steps.
I wanted an Aztec look and decided to add water and make the temple appear to be sinking. The water is Clear Coat [same stuff that Bruce uses] and the muddy bank around the edge is plaster.
I originally added more jungle foliage, but it became too difficult to see the temple.
The base is standard insulation foam each layer is 2" thick.
I started with a flat top and built the pyramid pieces around it. The Egytian Temple blocks matched exactly and allowed me to create a [sort of] stepped look. I also added a "lip" around the first tier using the gothic floor blocks which matched very well.
I carved out the lower section of the foam base and lined it with a thin coat of plaster [I find this takes paint really well and I NEVER have a bad chemical reaction from plaster [I sometimes get one with the bare foam]], painted it and filled it with an 1/8" clear coat tinted light brown. Once that set I added 1/4" of clear coat tinted a dark green. As this cured I added the vines [floral wire wrapped with stem tape] and placed pieces of green filler foliage to make the trees. I set the trees, vines and some sunken rocks, then added 1/4" clear coat tinted with a bit of black and green ink. On this I added static grass and some flocking and finished the base with some extra foliage and black and green flocking.
In better lighting the water has depth - this is why I tint the water with ink and not paint. [very tough to catch with my digital camera - also, in some shots the flash made the inside look white and others you can see the color of the inside].
