 Merchant's House

By BOB1804 - Dec. 31, 1969

General Description: This building is intended to be the home of a prosperous merchant and is built in a standard northern European medieval style. I wanted to experiment with mixing different types of blocks and other materials to add some interest to the building. I also wanted to use the accent pieces to try to show the wealth of the owner.

The other objective with this project was to focus only on the exterior of the project with the intent of being able to quickly crank out a building that could be used for “village filler”. It’s basically intended to help fill up a village setting with the idea being that the adventurers aren’t going to need to go into every building. Some buildings would just be for background effect. Unfortunately, it still took quite a while to finish so with most of my future projects, I will go ahead and finish the interiors as well.

The building is also designed to be slightly modular in that the back courtyard can be removed. Also, the outhouse is not glued on to the project. The building is not attached to a base so it can be dropped into any village setup. At some point I need to start working on a modular street system.

Otherwise, the project is pretty straightforward. The stone paint job is your standard issue gray color scheme with a few stones picked out with slightly lighter and dark shades of the base color. A few shingles were also picked out in a similar manner. I tried to use some different shades of gray for the different types of stone (i.e., small bricks, trim, cobblestone etc) to add some variety to the building. The second story walls are painted antique white and then hit with a dark brown wash. One thing that I learned the hard way about foam core walls is that they can warp when you add the moist spackle mixture to them. It’s best to apply the mixture in small patches and let it dry or insert an internal piece to keep the walls from bowing in while drying.

- Wooden Plank (#220) - Outhouse

- Fieldstone Accessory (#71) - Doors
- Tomb Mold (#56) – Arch on front of building
