Outpost Kappa Seven

Abstract : |
Outpost Kappa Seven built for Mongoose Publishing by us for a StarShip Tropers (SST) scenario - almost entirely scratchbuilt with the solitary exception of the generator vent that was kit-bashed from some leftover GW "thing" - otherwise its absolutely all our own work.
Lots of fibre optic lighting on the central compound, internal screens, guns, generator, vent, switches and the entire ground floor interior section illuminates via a EL Light-sheet which is underneath the mesh flooring.
The two "wing" sections containing the pillboxes can detach and be put together to form a smaller compound and there are also two scratch-built gun towers taken from the design in the original SST films - these can also be used entirely independently.
Despite the fibre optics in plasma cannons and close-defence lasers the turrets still rotate around neodymium magnets mounted on plastic bearings. The upper central gantry has its own independent lighting with the LEDs hidden underneath the upper flooring; the power on the upper section (9V PP3) is hidden in the rear "life support" casement hidden on the back and the very top "wing" with the turrets on is detachable - current being passed through hidden magnetic contacts that transfer current once the wing is re-attached to the lower section.
Lower lighting comes from 3 LED sources hidden in the left generator (oblong one) and the mains-powered Light-sheet and 2 additional LEDs are hidden in the main round generator along with the 12V DC connector switch.
The piece measures 4 foot across and 1 foot deep and was designed to represent a freshly constructed fort – hence no weathering or battle damage and just a plain muddy-earth surrounding patch of ground.
Painting was done by airbrush and decals from VVV and Fighting Piranha – the computer-screen screens are used with permission from the production company who originally produced them for 20th Century Fox – they are edited images printed onto photo-glossy paper an inserted into the various pre-cast resin screens, control pads and so forth.
There are a total of 117 decals and 58 screen images on the model, 7 LEDs, 48 square inches of Electro Luminescent Light-sheet, 68 meters of fibre optic cable, about 4 square feet of Styrofoam, 2 square feet of Rohacell, a couple of hundred individually cast “konkrete” panels and a lot of styrene beams and so forth.
I’ll make sure to get some images taken in low light as well as some with the complex in action surrounded by bugs and defended by 50 or so Troopers.
