the finished piece, i've completely repainted the walls, the windows and grille plates are the same old grey colour, so whilst it doesnt look a lot different at first glance when you compare those two colours you can see how much lighter it is.

Abstract : |
I am quite pleased with the sand, the tiles used were the new sci fi mould tiles, i used the carpet tiles for the sand, when painted up you can achieve quite a depth of colour due to the depth of the "pile". I am also please with the concrete floor tiles, i've just got to re paint the walls :(

well here it is painted, unfortunately in my head i thought the buildings had a concrete look from re-watching the films, hence the grey colour, then i re-re-watched the mos eisley scenes and discovered they are much closer to white - Doh

The Final Fantasy Globe Assembly
[ View ]
Abstract : |
This is the final assembly on the display stand. The base is cut from a piece of oak and is coated with 10+ layers of tung oil to achieve a glossy finish. The brass axle is mounted at about 23° to simulate the axis of the planet’s rotation. The plaque is created on an Objet Polyjet Eden 500V rapid prototyping machine. Black epoxy fills the lettering. Finally, the plaque is machined flat. The final painting of the continents will be done by the proud owner as he will know just where to place a certain forest, desert, lake…etc.

Mountain Textures applied and Whole Globe Painted Blue
[ View ]
Abstract : |
This shows the globe sanded smooth and painted blue. The blue paint represents the oceans. Just prior to this step, the mountain ranges (visible on right of the main continent pictured and pear shaped landmass center-top) are applied with glazing putty (similar to Bondo). The mountains on the globe correspond to mountainous areas indicated by the original hand drawing. The continent shown in this photo also features a large river. This is duplicated easily by creating the continent in five pieces and leaving a slight gap between the pieces when bonding the pieces to the wooded sphere. Again, I regret not taking a photo (of the mountains) before applying the blue paint.

All Continents Bonded in Place and Primed
[ View ]
Abstract : |
Here, the main continent is shown with all of the continents bonded to the globe and the whole assembly painted with gray primer. Standard 5 minute epoxy holds most of the pieces, cyanacrolate (SuperGlue) adheres a few of the smaller islands. I regret not getting a photo without the prime. The surface is a bit rough from the stereolithography process and will be sanded smooth before applying the mountain ranges.
