Syntha vs Viridians, 750pts.

Synth:
Warmachine
Dr Omega & Assault Tsynth squad
Assault Andro squad
2 Tactical Andro squads

Viridian:
2 Marine squads (w/sniper & grenade launchers)
1 Mortar Team
1 Terrasaur squad (2 scouts, 1 HQ, 1 Sgt)
1 small Strike Commando squad w/Drop Troop option

Not a whole lot of cover on the terrain board, but enough to hinder LOS if you maneuvered for it.

TURN ONE
Viridian wins initiative. Movement of all, pot-shot at long range from the terrasaur recoilless cannon at the Assault T-synths: miss.
TURN TWO
Synth wins initiative. More movement, Viridians move to ensure LOS screening with terrain to avoid being targeted by Tactical Andro pulse rifles, Assault Andro rush/charge for 12 movement, putting them within range of the mortar. Misses from all Viridian indirect fire weapons (recoilless cannon, mortar and one squads grenade launcher.)
TURN THREE
Synth wins initiative. More movement and closing, jockeying for opportune firing positions. T-synth Grapegun attack on the terrasaurs, one wound on one dino. Volley of fire from the terrasaurs on the Assault Andro’s results in all but two being killed. Mortar strike on the Assault T-synths deals out one wound to one figure. The other Marine squad moves into covered firing position and four shots take out Warmachine, Tactical Andros move and two can take a shot at two Marines in LOS, kills the Marine Sgt, command check passed, unit does not panic.
TURN FOUR
Viridians win initiative. Marines move out of cover and volley at closest Tactical Andros, (eight shots, only one kill!), then receives incoming from the two Tactical Andro squads, killing all but two member of their squad (that was not a good trade-off...) Additionally, they failed their command check – o the pair remaining are a panicked unit. The other Marine squad finishes off the remaining two Assault Andros. Another mortar strike fails. Volleys from the terrasaurs deliver one wound each to all the Assault Tsynths. Realizing the threat of having the Tsynths close to rush range of the terrasaurs, and two squads of Tactical Andros (shooters) ready to close distance on them, the Viridian player “drops in” his Strike Commandos to try and distract the Tactical Andros fire for a turn.
TURN FIVE
Viridians win initiative. Strike commandos move within short distance to get the +1 bonus on the to hit with gauss carbines, kill one Tactical Andro. The Andros return with a volley, killing all but two commandos, who made their command check - no panic. The other Marine squad moves in and volleys at the remaining Assault Tsynths, wiping all but one out, Synth player opts to keep the grape gunner, who fires at the terrasaurs, doing one more wound to one dino. The remaining Tactical Tsynth squad fires at the terrasaurs, does two wounds, so each dino has only one wound remaining. Plasma cannon hits and kills one terrasaur. Mortar misses a Tactical Andro squad, but only by 3 inches, ends up killing three of the targeted squad after all.
TURN SIX
Synth wins initiative, takes out remaining strike commandos – they did their job, preventing two volleys of pulse rifles in two turns from targeting the terrasaurs. Marines move and fire into Tactical Andro squad, all misses. One Tactical Andro squad volleys at terrasaurs, with the plasma cannon taking out the Sgt, command check passed. Mortar fires and misses for no effect, remaining tactical Andro squad targets the Marine squad, wiping them all out except the Sgt, who makes his command check.

At this point, Viridian player has one terrasaur remaining, one Marine Sgt and a full Mortar Team. Synth player has four Assault Andros and a Plasma gunner. The game is still up for grabs, two or even one good mortar strike would win the game, and the remaining terrasaur has the “Spotter” skill, and one wound on him. If the Tactical Andros can maneuver right, they can make the kills quick by winning initiative and only moderately good rolls.

TURN SEVEN
Viridian wins initiative. Mortar strike misses, Andros move and fire into remaining terrasaur, killing it, remaining Marine rushes for cover, sacrificing his shot in favor of hiding to support the remaining mortar.
TURN EIGHT
Viridian player wins initiative, mortar strike misses, Androsynths move and fire on the remaining Sgt, killing him.
TURN NINE
Viridian player wins initiative, mortar strike misses, Andros move and fire, killing two of the team, remaining mortarman is vaporized by the plasma cannon.

Viridian Players opinion –
This was the best game yet, evenly matched from the get-go with lots of good tactical choices during the game by both sides. My opponent employed smartly, and were the main aggressors, covering the distance, hoping to get into assault range, while I played the Viridians true to their strengths, close a little, then anchor & support one another, dishing out long-range fire and using the commandos at a strategic point during the game where they could make the most impact (and they bought my terrasaurs two extra turns of firing and spotting for the mortar.) Although the commandos lasted about as long as I expected, they did not do as much damage as I was hoping for.

I thought it wise to take out the Synth assault troops as quickly as possible, being familiar with the amount of damage they can do if you let them get to close combat (ouch!) Had I not taken out the assault troops, the game would have been over much quicker and more decisively.

Having his assault troops take the brunt of fire allowed the Synth player to maneuver the shooters in relatively unscathed, despite my distraction attempt with the Strike Commandos. I found all my Viridian indirect fire (mortar, recoilless cannon, grenade launchers) just about useless. They fired a total of 12 times, with only two direct hits doing damage, and the worst damage being done by a miss that landed close enough to take out three enemy models.

I am going to have to re-think the way I organize my Viridian force choices, and not rely so heavily on indirect fire in the future.
