After the apperance of the first D' Deridex Class ships, it was apparent that the Romulans were back and meant business. With the laying down of the first Nebula class ships it was determined that one weapons pod would be designed to hunt down and kill cloaked vessels. With it's sensor heavy pod and it's 360 degree Phaser bank the Phoenix was meant to set fire to cloaked vessels on all sides. |

| Fed Excelsior Class |

May as well show another class that had an Enterprise in it. The Excelsiors have been the workhorse of starfleet for many years, and the spaceframe was suited to upgrades and refits that kept them a viable starship well into the Next Generation |

Precursor of the Galaxy, the Ambassador fills the gap between the time when the Excelsior was state of the art, and the generation we came to know as the "next" one.

Here is a sample .pdf of the Galaxy Class starship. Note the collimater ring represented by the dotted lines. The Galaxy has quite a phaser broadside, but a good complement of Photon Torpedoes as well.
Note that we did not go with the seperation system shown in a few episodes. That would have required a lot of work for very little payoff.
