When one imagines the scale of construction even for just one hive, even the thought of contemplating the structure would drive most men insane.
Miles of trackless land is cleared in every direction as the understructure and sublevels are carved out of the living rock. Immense support pillons and huge construction equipment rumble buy busy churning dirt and forging the life-blood of the hive.
Even before the sublevels are completed, the next highest tiers of the hive are under construction - effectively sealing workers into the bottom of the hive where they will most likely die toiling at the immense labors required to accomplish their solitary goal.
Penal laborers and full time craftsman move throughout the labarynthian tunnels, conduits, and lakes of sewage and rain water which collects in the sublevels before the construction is complete. Ever higher the structure climbs, and even further out the bottom stretches as the guild masters push for more space to expand their own personal empires and influence with the noble houses.
The lakes of water, raw sewage and toxic liquid merge and begin to flood cavern like rooms. Trapped in small collecting pool sized pockets or in many mile wide chambers under the hive. The absolute center of the underhive looks more like an up-turned funnel. The entire chamber is flooded for ten level below, leaving only 20 sublevels clear of the waste and filth.
As the water levels begin to rise, the inhabitants/workers of the underhive are required to build floating platforms and transport ferrys to get men and material from one location to an other. These vessels range in size from small oar driven boats to full sized paddle wheeled steam ships. The more industrius and wealthy the owner is, the more advanced the vessel is - from steam to fossil fuels, to power cells. The myriad of different designs and the relative availability of constrution materials makes for some very interesting craft floating along the waters.
Some underhive inhabitants make their trade ferrying passengers from one part of the underhive to an other. Areas are difficult to reach other than by boat, raft or by travelling the outskirts of the hive itself. Some of these industrius people live a life less savory. They collect tolls for the ferrying service they promise, and when some reach a point far out in the water, the passengers are executed and thrown overboard into the festering toxic waters. This practace is most common in some of the chem zones where the bodies will disolve in the acidic chemical pools floating within the waters leaving little if any evidence of their treachery.
